SanDisk (SNDK) has unveiled the world's most spacious storage card for smartphones. The catchy-named "SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card, Premium Edition," comes with 200 gigabytes of storage. That's 72 GB more storage than the next-largest option on the market.

But before you get too excited, cramming all that capacity on a tiny microSD card the size of your fingernail isn't for everyone.

High-capacity storage is extremely expensive stuff. SanDisk said it will go on sale sometime in the spring -- and cost $400.

Also, many newer phones also don't come with expandable storage. The Apple (AAPL, Tech30) iPhone has never allowed customers to insert SD cards to grow its storage capacity, and Samsung (SSNLF) just eliminated that option from its new Galaxy S6 smartphone.

If you want all that storage in your phone but can't get it, don't despair. SanDisk also makes internal storage for smartphones, and you could one day see a 200 GB iPhone or Android phone hit store shelves.

Storage prices also tend to come down over time. Apple just increased the capacity of its two larger-capacity iPhones this past year, doubling customers' storage without raising the price of the iPhone.

As smartphones become our primary cameras, those huge photo and video files tend to eat up space pretty quickly. A growing number of cloud storage options, including Google+ (GOOGL, Tech30) Photos, Amazon (AMZN, Tech30) Cloud Drive, Apple iCloud and Dropbox are making photo backup much easier -- but you still have to erase the photos from your phone when your on-board storage space fills up.

SanDisk's 200 GB of extra storage would pretty much eliminate the need to methodically erase stuff from your phone.

The company also says that the SD card will allow super-fast transfer rates, allowing customers to move 1,200 photos per minute from a phone to a computer.

Xerox's Scanner Problem Just Got Bigger

Businessweek.com - Xerox (XRX) is now saying that some of its scanners can alter numbers in documents, even at the highest resolution setting. It blames a software bug for which it does not yet have a fix. “We continue to work tirelessly and diligently to develop a software patch to address the problem,” the company said in an Aug. 11 statement.

The admission over the weekend is a fresh embarrassment for Xerox, which assured customers last week that scanners would alter documents only if the factory settings were changed to a lower resolution. Now it says problems can occur at the factory settings and even at the “highest modes”—i.e., above the factory settings.

“We apologize for any confusion that came from our prior communications,” Rick Dastin, president of Xerox’s office and solutions business group, said in Sunday’s statement.

Routine documents should still be reproduced perfectly, according to Dastin. The ones where problems occur are “stress” documents, “which include documents with small fonts, those scanned multiple times and hard to read.” His statement includes a list of affected machines.

The problem came to light when German computer scientist David Kriesel scanned a construction plan on a Xerox machine and noticed that it changed numbers on some of the room measurements. In an e-mail, Kriesel said he was honored that Xerox had reached out to him to acknowledge the problem and asked him to test their patch. He wrote, “I am glad not to go down in history as the guy too dumb to read the manual. :-)”

But will it be an iPad 1 or an iPad 2? For those of you that want the latest and greatest, of course, the iPad 2 is unquestionably drool-worthy and awesome. But the first-generation iPad has a lot going for it. I’ll show you why.

First of all, there's the price, which made a number of people balk when Steve first introduced the iPad. Because you waited a year, you’ve been rewarded by Apple, which has slashed the price of the original iPad by $100. This means the least expensive 16GB Wi-Fi-only model sells for $399 instead of $499. If you get a refurbished iPad through Apple's site, the price goes down $349.

Beyond the price, the first iPad is about to get a whole lot better thanks to a free software upgrade and the launch of some killer apps this Friday.

The new iOS 4.3 boasts an improved Internet browsing experience with a newly revamped Safari browser. Apple will also roll out two killer apps: Garageband and iMovie for iPad. If you haven’t seen them yet, run don’t walk over to Apple’s website and check out the demos.

You’ll be able to play and record instruments with the Garageband program, and iMovie could be one of the best implemented video editing software tools ever built. Both of these apps are $4.99 and will work beautifully on the iPad.

What about another tablet, say a Motorola Xoom? Thanks but no thanks.

Right now other tablet manufacturers like Motorola are trying to compete with Apple on specs like speed -- and they’re losing the tablet game badly. That’s because Apple is crushing them on design, consumer experience, and pricing. The Xoom is flashy but it’s not even in the same league as the iPad.

Don't get me wrong, the iPad 2 is fantastic.

The new industrial design is astonishing, something you can’t appreciate by looking at a picture. Once you hold it in your hand you’ll marvel at the team of engineers that managed to make it lighter, faster and thinner than the original. In fact it’s even thinner than the iPhone 4 --yes, you read that correctly.

Speaking of the competition, you’ll appreciate the new iPad even more if you’ve ever held a Samsung Galaxy Tab -- which feels like a double-thick Hershey’s jumbo chocolate bar next to it.

This new baby is fast, too. Apple slapped a new dual-core processor inside, which basically means faster web surfing, better game playing, and slicker video viewing. Everything just works better.

Then there's the camera that you knew would come to the iPad 2 -- not just one but two of them, it turns out. The front-facing camera is perfect for FaceTime video chatting, and the rear camera is for snapping photos, or for apps that may take advantage of it for "augmented reality" purposes. I’m glad it has a camera but to be honest I didn’t miss that on the original iPad.

iPad 2 also comes with its choice of two wireless carriers, AT&T and Verizon. iPad 1 only supports AT&T.

The Bottom line is that it really depends on how much cash you’re willing to shell out. Either choice is solid -- and remember you’re also buying into an Apple experience that includes 65,000 iPad only applications. No other tablet manufacturer can say that, not even close.

So go ahead, buy one, buy either one. It’s time to be impulsive.

Patent for Hardware Antivirus Device Granted To Russian Inventor

Kaspersky Labs, a cybersecurity group based in Russia, was recently awarded the patent for a hardware antivirus device that aims to keep your computer secure by attaching directly to the disk drive, below rootkit access.

Software can always be compromised, and solution proposed by the mad geniuses at Kaspersky is to put an antivirus system deeper in your computer than your infected software can reach. Here's the device, as explained the abstract for the patent:

An anti-virus (AV) system based on a hardware-implemented AV module for curing infected computer systems and a method for updating AV databases for effective curing of the computer system. The hardware-based AV system is located between a PC and a disk device. The hardware-based AV system can be implemented as a separate device or it can be integrated into a disk controller. An update method of the AV databases uses a two-phase approach. First, the updates are transferred to from a trusted utility to an update sector of the AV system. Then, the updates are verified within the AV system and the AV databases are updated. The AV system has its own CPU and memory and can be used in combination with AV application.

As some people are pointing out, the device's lack of network access means that it has to be updated via some software, somewhere on your machine, which ostensibly is just as susceptible to attack as anything else.

Still, the idea of putting a teeny tiny shield right at the heart of our computer definitely makes us feel safer from viruses. And it would also probably be a lot less annoying than our current AV software.

Sony Relents After 11 Years, Launches First SD Card Line-up

Big news from the Sony camp, on January 6th they're embracing 1999's flash-in-the-pan fad and have launched their first line-up of SD cards. Hopefully that spells the death of the evil Memory Stick and sliding disinterest in their propriety formats.

There's five SD/SDHC cards and three microSD/microSDHC cards on offer, all class-4-speed. The 2GB SD is $14.99, and for SDHCs the 4GB is $29.99, 8GB is $44.99, 16GB is $79.99, 32GB $159.99.

The 2GB microSD is $14.99, 4GB is $29.99 and 8GB is $44.99. All come with adapters and the possibility of a heart-attack being brought on as Sony losing a little more of its stubbornness.

Hard Rectangular Drive Is Faster, More Efficient Than SSD

British scientists have developed a new breed of hard drive that uses not spinning discs, but rather a rectangular platter and millions of moving data heads to read/write data. In theory, this could mean transfer speeds of 500 MB/s.

Register Hardwaresays that The Hard Rectangular Drive (HRD), developed by DataSlide, is roughly 4x faster than current HDDs, and uses the same process to manufacture CPUs for the data heads. Piezoelectric actuators are used to scan the data heads and access specific parts of the magnetically-encoded platter. At any one time, 64 data heads are able to simultaneously transfer data. It also only uses 4W of power, which makes it half as power thirsty as a SSD.

The current technology consists of a single platter in a 3.5-inch drive, though it will be possible to stack platters in the future.
