Want to be a spy? The Mossad is recruiting

Haaretz.com - It is already common for intelligence agencies to recruit their officers online, but Israel's Mossad has gone one further by touting for local agents and informants too.

Israel, which has full diplomatic ties with only two Arab countries, Egypt and Jordan, lacks embassies elsewhere in the Middle East that would-be informants could turn to, leaving it in need of other local recruitment channels.

"All are welcome, regardless of religion, nationality or occupation, to contact our organization -- Mossad -- to work for us or to be involved in activities which could bring great personal benefit," reads the new "Contact us" section of the Mossad website, also available in Arabic, Farsi, French or Russian.

"Rest assured that total discretion and confidentiality is of the utmost priority and is the basis of our connection."

Even in Egypt and Jordan, Israel's embassies are under heavy scrutiny and, apparently heeding the risk that online offers of information or help may also be far from secure, Mossad adds:

"We suggest you consider whether the computer you are using and your location is secure enough. It would be safer to fill in the form using means that are not directly connected to you."

The glossy Mossad website went up a decade ago to boost recruitment for officers and analysts amid increasingly fierce competition from Israel's booming private hi-tech sector. In one promotional video, a couple are shown racing from shadowy spy missions to family time at home.

Gad Shimron, a former Mossad field officer who now writes on intelligence and military affairs, said the new approach "seems to be an effort by the Mossad to attract the maximum number of interested parties."

"If some of them prove to be valuable sources of information or help, even if 90 percent get written off as useless, that could still be worthwhile."

Telkom dan Biznet Diduga Mata-matai Pengguna

Kompas.com - Tiga perusahaan penyedia jasa internet Indonesia (ISP atau internet service provider) diduga memasang perangkat lunak mata-mata intelijen jarak jauh, FinFisher, atau juga dikenal sebagai FinSpy.

Tiga perusahaan itu adalah Telkom, Biznet, dan Matrixnet Global.

Dugaan ini merupakan hasil penelitian Citizen Lab, Universitas Toronto, Kanada, yang dipublikasikan pada 13 Maret 2013. FinFisher adalah perangkat lunak pemantau jarak jauh yang dikembangkan oleh Gamma International di Munich, Jerman.

Menurut Citizen Lab, produk FinFisher dipasarkan dan dijual secara eksklusif untuk penegak hukum dan badan intelijen oleh Gamma Group yang berbasis di Inggris.

Di Indonesia, perangkat lunak mata-mata itu terdeteksi di alamat protokol internet (IP Address) berikut ini:

"FinSpy menangkap informasi dari komputer yang terinfeksi, seperti password dan panggilan Skype, dan mengirimkan informasi ke server perintah dan kontrol FinSpy," demikian hasil penelitian Citizen Lab.

Pihak Telkom dan Biznet memberi komentar tentang dugaan yang dilayangkan ke mereka. Keduanya membantah telah menggunakan perangkat lunak mata-mata.

Citizen Lab mencatat, perangkat lunak FinSpy terdeteksi di 25 negara. Selain Indonesia, ia juga ada di Australia, Bahrain, Banglades, Brunei, Kanada, Ceko, Estonia, Etiopia, Jerman, India, Jepang, Latvia, Malaysia, Meksiko, Mongolia, Belanda, Qatar, Serbia, Singapura, Turkmenistan, Uni Emirat Arab, Inggris, Amerika Serikat, dan Vietnam.

Researchers Decipher Keyboard Typing from Thin Air

As long as someone isn't looking over your shoulder and your computer is free from keylogging software, what you type should be pretty safe...or it was, until researchers learned to read your keyboard's electromagnetic radiation.

While two separate teams have developed a variety of ways to sniff out your typing from a nearby area, our favorite involves just $5,000 worth of equipment: a PC, antenna, oscilloscope, and an analog to digital converter (use your government coupon!).

With this rig, they could decode what most keyboards were typing (with 95% accuracy) from 22 yards away. Laptops proved the hardest to read because a laptop keyboard's electromagnetic signature tends to mix with the rest of the system. But those fancy, wireless encrypted keyboards? Easy. Apparently such a keyboard identifies itself with every keypress because it passes an encryption algorithm. Once identified, it's decoded like any other keyboard.

No, it's probably not the easiest way to steal your password, but it's certainly the most theatrical.
