Pre-installed keyboard leaves 600 million Samsung smartphones vulnerable to hackers
Foxnews.com - If you're rocking a Samsung smartphone, you could be vulnerable to hackers, thanks to a preinstalled keyboard on your device.
The vulnerability was discovered by Ryan Welton from mobile security specialists NowSecure. The issue is with the preinstalled SwiftKey keyboard which looks for language pack updates over an unencrypted line. Welton found that a hacker could create a spoof proxy server and send a fake update to the device with malicious code. The hacker could then exploit the device by eavesdropping on incoming and outgoing messages or voice calls, access personal data such as pictures or text messages, tamper with apps, and even install other malicious apps.
Welton first discovered the flaw last year and subsequently notified Samsung in December 2014. Samsung immediately worked on a patch and sent updates to various carriers for devices running Android 4.2 or higher in March 2015. However, it's unknown whether these patches have made their way to devices. Carriers are notorious for taking their time with updates due to their so-called rigorous testing for bugs.
Unfortunately, there is no other fix because users can't simply uninstall the SwiftKey app -- one of the not so joyous benefits of carrier bloatware. Users are still vulnerable even when SwiftKey isn't set as the default keyboard.
What's even scarier about this vulnerability is it even affects the Galaxy S6, which was released in April. Welton detailed this security flaw earlier today at the Blackhat Security Summit in London. He stated that he was able to hack into a Galaxy S6 running on Verizon Wireless. "We can confirm that we have found the flaw still unpatched on the Galaxy S6 for the Verizon and Sprint networks, in off the shelf tests we did over the past couple of days," a NowSecure spokesperson confirmed.
According to the NowSecure website, it's likely that the Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S5, and Galaxy S6 are all affected, but it's unclear which carrier-specific models received updates. The site only mentions U.S. carriers, so we aren't sure if owners of international variants need to be worried.
Now before everyone with a Samsung phone goes into a panic attack, we need to point out that chances are rare that your device will be attacked through this vulnerability. A hacker can only use this method via a public Wi-Fi network, like those found at a coffee shop, hotel, or other public spaces. More importantly, a hacker has to have knowledge of this exploit and has to be on the same network as you. Chances are very slim that a hacker who knows about this security flaw will be at your local Starbucks at the same exact time as you.
Nevertheless, a security flaw should never be taken lightly, so NowSecure recommends staying away from public Wi-Fi networks if you have one of these Samsung devices. That might be easier said then done, though, especially for those who are on capped data plans and don't want to use their carrier's mobile network all day. The other thing you can do is contact your carrier and demand that your phone gets updated with the patch if it hasn't already.

Warning Over TV Which Listens In On Users
Sky.com - Samsung has warned people against discussing sensitive and private information in the vicinity of its new smart televisions - because it will be translated into text and stored in a central computer.
The new privacy policy for the voice-activated television allows the company and its partners to listen in on everything that people say.
The policy states: "Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party through your use of voice recognition.
"While Samsung will not collect your spoken word, Samsung may still collect associated texts and other usage data so that we can evaluate the performance of the feature and improve it."
Samsung insists that the data is encrypted to keep it safe, and points out that owners can disconnect their TV from wifi to keep their data secure.
In a statement it said: "In all of our Smart TVs we employ industry-standard security safeguards and practices, including data encryption, to secure consumers' personal information and prevent unauthorised collection or use."
However, without an internet connection the voice recognition feature stops working entirely.
While lots of voice-recognition devices use an internet connection to better translate sounds into actions, the storing and sharing with third parties is a particular privacy concern for some Samsung users.
The privacy policy was first highlighted by a Reddit user, and many of the comments compared the situation to the telescreens described in George Orwell novel 1984.
In the book, Orwell wrote: "Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by, moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard."

Samsung Umumkan Ponsel-Kamera Galaxy K Zoom
Kompas.com - Samsung resmi meluncurkan produk teranyarnya, Galaxy K Zoom dalam sebuah acara global launching di Singapura, Selasa (29/4/2014). Generasi K pertama ini disebut sebagai ponsel pintar dengan spesialisasi pada kamera dengan fitur 10 kali optical zoom yang menjadi andalannya.
Eugene Goh, Vice President of IT and Mobile Samsung Electronics Singapore memaparkan, kualitas kamera Galaxy K Zoom disokong oleh sensor 20,7 megapixel BSI CMOS. Dengan 10x optical zoom, gambar yang dihasilkan akan tetap tajam meski diperbesar berkali-kali.
Lensa Galaxy K Zoom memiliki diameter 24-240mm dengan bukaan lensa f3.1 – 6.3. Selain itu, ada pula unit Xenon Flash yang memberikan cahaya lebih terang dari lampu kilat untuk memberi pencahayaan alami.
Produk ini juga didukung dengan fitur Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) yang berguna meredam guncangan agar foto yang dihasilkan tidak blur. Spesifikasi kamera ini diklaim Samsung dapat menghasilkan foto dan video (1080p Full HD) yang tajam, bahkan dalam cahaya rendah.
"Smartphone pada umumnya menggunakan LED untuk flash. Namun, kami gunakan Xenon glash karena bisa lebih terang, warna stabil, dan cakupannya lebih luas," papar Goh. Ia menambahkan, auto fokus pada ponsel ini diklaim dapat melacak objek utama dengan cepat.
Galaxy K Zoom juga memudahkan pengguna mengambil foto diri sendiri tanpa bantuan orang lain, atau populer disebut selfie, melalui fitur Selfie Alarm. Tersedia pula 5 pengaturan filter untuk mempercantik foto.
Samsung membuat tampilan yang sederhana untuk aplikasi kamera di Galaxy K Zoom, sehingga pengguna dengan mudah mengakses dan mengambil gambar dalam situasi apapun.

Penampakan Galaxy S4 Activ, Android Premium Tahan Air
Detik.com - Samsung Galaxy S4 kabarnya akan keluar dalam versi tahan air. Untuk pertama kalinya, foto-foto Galaxy S4 Active, sebutan untuk handset tersebut beredar.
Desainnya terlihat cukup berbeda dengan Galaxy S4. Jika bodi S4 memakai bahan dari plastik, tampaknya, S4 terbuat dari material metal. Terlihat juga tiga tombol fisik navigasi di bawah layarnya.
Soal spesifikasi, S4 Activ dilaporkan mirip-mirip dengan S4 sehingga performanya kemungkinan sama gaharnya. Prosesornya quad core 1,9 GHz yang kabarnya Snapdragon 600. Sedangkan layarnya 5 inch full HD 1080p dengan kepadatan pixel 480ppi.

Samsung Resmikan Android Dual SIM Galaxy Core
Detik.com - Samsung kembali memperkenalkan model baru smartphone Android. Vendor asal Korea Selatan ini meresmikan kehadiran Galaxy Core, ponsel Android dual SIM untuk pasar kelas menengah.
Galaxy Core memiliki bentang layar 4,3 inch dengan resolusi 480 x 800 pixel. Sedangkan prosesornya 1,2 GHz dual core serta RAM 1GB.
Adapun kameranya beresolusi 5 megapixel. Menariknya, Galaxy Core membawa beberapa fitur yang biasanya hanya ada di seri Galaxy S.
Seperti Smart Stay yang memungkinkan layar tetap menyala selama mata pengguna tetap menatapnya. Dan Smart Alert untuk mengingatkan jika ada missed call atau messages, saat ponsel diangkat.
Selain versi dual SIM, juga ada versi single SIM Galaxy Core. Rencananya akan menyapa pasar beberapa negara mulai bulan Mei ini.

Memo could sink Samsung’s case against Apple
Foxnews.com - The second week of the Apple vs. Samsung case began with a bang yesterday, courtesy of a 2010 memo written by Samsung’s own president of mobile electronics. In it, J.K. Shin repeatedly calls for a drastic improvement to the design of the company’s phones — and he repeatedly points out the iPhone as the standard to be met.
Early in the memo, Shin relates a scene he says he experienced again and again with carriers who have spent their subsidy budget on buying Apple’s handset: “I hear things like this: Let’s make something like the iPhone. When everybody (both consumers and the industry) talk about UX, they weigh it against the iPhone. The iPhone has become the standard. That’s how things are already.”
“Do you know how difficult the Omnia is to use? When you compare the 2007 version of the iPhone with our current Omnia, can you honestly say the Omnia is better? If you compare the UX with the iPhone, it’s a difference between Heaven and Earth.”
It’s easy to see why Samsung didn’t want this note released as evidence.
Later on, Shin moves on to the interface specifically. He’s fine with the external design of Samsung’s phones, he says, “but when it comes to the ease of use of our (user interface), I lack such confidence.
“Influential figures outside the company come across the iPhone, and they point out that “Samsung is dozing off. All this time we’ve been paying all our attention to Nokia, and concentrated our efforts on things like Folder, Bar, Slide. Yet when our UX is compared to the unexpected competitor Apple’s iPhone, the difference is truly that of Heaven and Earth. It’s a crisis of design.”
In the wake of the iPhone, Shin says, the company needs to cater less to the whims of carriers and create phones with more natural interfaces and metallic exteriors rather than plastic ones. “The iPhone’s emergence means the time we have to change our methods has arrived.”

Dianggap Contek iPad, Penjualan Galaxy Tab 10.1 Dihentikan

Kali ini yang kena getahnya adalah tablet Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Dalam sebuah pengadilan, seorang hakim memerintahkan Samsung untuk menghentikan sementara penjualan tablet tersebut di AS, pada Selasa (26/6/2012).
Perintah ini dikeluarkan hakim berkaitan dengan tuntutan Apple yang menganggap Galaxy Tab 10.1 telah mencontek iPad.
Apple mengklaim tablet buatan Samsung tersebut menggunakan paten desain yang sama dengan yang digunakan tablet besutan mereka.
Hakim distrik AS, Lucy Koh, mengatakan bahwa atas tuntutan ini, kemungkinan besar Apple akan menang.
Pada pengadilan sebelumnya, Koh mengatakan bahwa dua produk tersebut (iPad dan Galaxy Tab 10.1) "hampir tidak bisa dibedakan". Namun waktu itu (Desember 2011), ia menolak untuk mengeluarkan perintah penghentian penjualan Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Atas saran pengadilan banding federal yang juga sedang menangani kasus paten Apple dan Samsung, Koh mengubah keputusannya.
"Samsung memiliki hak untuk berkompetisi. Namun, mereka tidak memiliki hak untuk bersaing secara tidak adil, membanjiri pasar dengan produk yang melanggar," tulis Koh. Dia mengatakan bahwa Apple akan dirugikan jika penjualan Galaxy Tab 10.1 terus berlanjut.
Pihak Samsung mengatakan kecewa atas keputusan pengadilan ini.
"Kami akan mengambil langkah hukum yang diperlukan dan tidak mengharapkan bahwa keputusan itu memiliki dampak yang signifikan terhadap kelangsungan bisnis kami karena kami memiliki beragam produk Galaxy Tab," menurut Samsung dalam sebuah pernyataan.

Pihak Samsung mengatakan kecewa atas keputusan pengadilan ini.
"Kami akan mengambil langkah hukum yang diperlukan dan tidak mengharapkan bahwa keputusan itu memiliki dampak yang signifikan terhadap kelangsungan bisnis kami karena kami memiliki beragam produk Galaxy Tab," menurut Samsung dalam sebuah pernyataan.
Keputusan itu adalah bagian kecil dari pertempuran paten yang lebih besar di antara dua raksasa teknologi tersebut. Kedua pihak dijadwalkan untuk bertemu di pengadilan bulan depan.

Samsung unveils dual-sim Galaxy Ace Duos with GSM radios
Gsmarena.com - The world-wide edition of the Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos is now official.
It's been a while since we saw the dual-mode version of the phone get announced for India. Now we finally have the two-SIM-slot variety intended for for international GSM markets.
Specs-wise, the Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos is no surprise. There's a 3.5” HVGA (320x480px) LCD screen, 5MP camera with VGA video recording, 832MHz processor, 512MB RAM and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The user-available on-board storage space is supposedly 3GB, but there's a microSD slot as well. The battery on this one is mere 1,300 mAh unlike the one on the CDMA variety, which is 1650 mAh. But hey, perhaps CDMA networks strain battery consumption harder.
The good news are that at 11.5mm thickness, the new dual SIM variety of the Galaxy Ace Duos is as slim as the original Galaxy Ace and it's less than 10g heavier.
The smartphone comes with Samsung’s proprietary ‘Dual SIM always on’ feature, which automatically forwards calls from SIM 2 to the SIM 1 when when the user is talking on SIM 1, meaning there are no calls missed calls.
The Galaxy Ace Duos will launch first in Russia this June but it will later roll out to the rest of Europe, CIS, Latin America, Southeast and Southwest Asia, Middle East, Africa, and China.
The GSM+CDMA version costs $340 in India, so we should probably expect similar pricing with the worldwide edition as well.

Samsung Galaxy S III Kurang Memuaskan?

Produsen asal Korea selatan inipun menempatkannya sebagai smartphone premium yang paling diandalkan untuk Tahun 2012 ini. Samsung telah menyiapkannya menjadi yang terbaik di kelasnya. Beberapa keunggulan yang menjadi andalan di antaranya adalah mengusung layar sentuh lebar berukuran 4,8 inch Super HD AMOLED 1280 X 720 pixel, kamera 8 MP, RAM 1 GB, prosesor quad-core Exynos 1,4 Ghz serta sistem operasi Android 4.0 ini.
Dibalik segala kecanggihannya tersebut, ternyata masih ada yang kurang puas dengan Samsung Galayx S III. Beberapa rekan media yang SELULAR Online temui di acara peluncuran Samsung Galaxy S III kemarin di Jakarta menyampaikan alasannya. Salah satunya adalah wartawan dari media online terkemuka yang mengatakan, "Sayang sekali dengan fiturnya yang hebat itu, desainnya kurang menarik." Menurutnya, kehadiran smartphone ini seperti anti klimaks, karena sebelum peluncurannya pemberitaan yang terus menerus mengenai produk ini semakin mengundang rasa ingin tahu konsumen maupun wartawan sehingga ekspektasinya pun tinggi. Dan ekspekstasi itu turun ketika mengetahui desain smartphone - yang merupakan kesan pertama ketika melihat suatu produk - kurang istimewa.
Spesifikasi yang diberikan pun juga tidak beda jauh dengan kompetitor terkuatnya di kelas yang sama. Sehingga tidak mampu menciptakan kesan "wow". Dia justru lebih menyukai desain Samsung Galaxy S II yang terkesan lebih ekslusif dan mewah. SELULAR Online pun juga merasakan hal yang sama ketika memegang smartphone ini untuk beberapa saat.
Namun, pihak Samsung justru menganggap desain Samsung Galaxy S III ini bagus. Perusahaan asal Korea ini menyebut generasi ketiga Samsung Galaxy S ini didesain untuk manusia dan diinspirasi dari alam. Maksudnya didesain untuk manusia adalah kemampuan untuk mengenali suara dan mengerti keinginan penggunanya.
"Cover baterai Samsung Galaxy S III menggunakan bahan Polycarbonate berkualitas tinggi yang lebih ringan dan solid dibanding plastik biasa," kata Andry Sutamto, Product Marketing Manager Mobile PT Samsung Electonics Indonesia di acara media workshop Samsung Galaxy S III di Jakarta (22/5/2012). Andry menjelaskan bahwa elemen alam yang menginspirasi desain smartphone ini adalah pepohonan, angin, dedaunan, kerikil, dan air. Penerapannya adalah pada desain ramping yang bertepi melengkung, memberikan kenyamanan menggenggam sehingga bisa untuk mengontrol semua fitur hanya dengan satu tangan. Themes UI dan nada dering juga bernuansa alam. Begitu juga dengan pilihan warna yang diklaim mewakili desain nuansa alam yaitu pebble blue dan marble white. Perbedaan pandangan bisa saja terjadi. Bagaimanapun juga, konsumenlah yang menentukan nanti akan menyukainya atau tidak.

Samsung Perkenalkan Galaxy Ace 2 dan Galaxy Mini 2
Kompas.com - Samsung kembali menambah lini produk smartphone dari keluarga Galaxy yang berbasis Android. Pada Selasa (21/2/2012), pabrikan asal Korea Selatan ini memperkenalkan dua produk baru, yaitu Galaxy Ace 2 dan Galaxy Mini 2.
Galaxy Ace 2 diperkuat dengan spesifikasi hardware yang lebih tinggi dari pendahulunya, Galaxy Ace. Galaxy Ace 2 menggunakan prosesor dual core 800MHz, RAM 768MB, memori internal 4GB dengan slot MicroSD, dan berjalan dengan sistem operasi Android 2,3 (Gingerbread).
Ukuran layar serta resolusi Galaxy Ace 2 juga ditingkatkan. Bentang layarnya menjadi 3,8 inci WVGA beresolusi 480x800 piksel. Dari sisi kamera, Galaxy Ace 2 memiliki kamera 5MP dengan LED Flash dan kamera depan VGA, sama seperti Galaxy Ace.
Peningkatan spesifikasi juga dialami oleh Galaxy Mini 2. Smartphone ini dibekali prosesor 800MHz, RAM 512MB, memori internal 4GB dengan slot MicroSD, dan berjalan dengan Android Gingerbread.
Layar Galaxy Mini 2 didesain lebih besar, yakni 3,7 inci HVGA dengan resolusi yang juga ditingkatkan, 320x480 piksel. Namun, kameranya tetap 3MP, tanpa disertai LED Flash dan kamera depan.
Galaxy Ace 2 akan tersedia pertama kali di Inggris pada April mendatang, sedangkan Galaxy Mini 2 akan dipasarkan di Perancis pada bulan depan, baru selanjutnya beredar di seluruh dunia.
Samsung belum memberi informasi soal harga kedua smartphone ini.
