Is the bizarre Sky Whale the future of air travel?
Wait a minute, it's a what? A whale plane?!
That's right, a bizarre new design has been unveiled for a passenger plane shaped like the majestic mammal.
Created by Spanish designer Oscar Vinals, the AWWA Sky Whale would be bigger than the Airbus A380 jumbo jet, and would be more technologically advanced.
And if it crashes the passenger section of the aircraft would separate from the wings, to hopefully limit the number of deaths.
Even cooler, it would have a 'self-healing' skin, although it hasn't been explained how this would be possible.
The wings would reach 289 feet, compared to 262 feet of the Airbus A380.
The plane will also be more efficient than current aircraft thanks to a hybrid turbo-electric propulsion system, and its curves will reduce drag.
So, just what will they think of next?

A Cannon for Shooting Supplies into Space
If John Hunter—a former physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory—is successful, the International Space Station may start receiving their supplies from a cannon. No, it's no joke.
First postulated by Jules Verne in his novel From the Earth to the Moon, the idea of space cannons is not new. Many engineers have toyed with the concept, but nobody has came up with an actual project that may work. Hunter's idea is simple: Build a cannon near the equator, submerged in the ocean, hooked to a floating rig. At the cannon's bottom there is a combustion chamber, which uses natural gas to heat hydrogen up to 2,600ºF, increasing the pressure 500%. When released, the gas will launch a capsule with half a ton of material into space, at a swooshing 13,000mph.
The project itself would only cost $500 million, which is a really stupid amount considering the potential benefits: A system like this will cut launch costs from $5,000 per pound to only $250 per pound. It won't launch people into space because of the excessive acceleration, but those guys at the ISS can use it to order pizza and real ice cream.

Amphibious Hybrid Gives Paddle Boating Some Much-Needed Machismo
As you can see form the picture, this is no ordinary paddle boat. In fact, when the exhilarating water fun is over, there's no need to disembark. Just hit a switch and drive home.
The key component are the three wheels, which morph from the paddle form you see in the image to a traditional wheel for land-based activities. In the case of snow or other such hard-to-traverse terrain, the wheels can open slightly, mimicking snow tires or chains.
Designers Janne Leppänen, Tuulia Miettinen, Roope Kolu, Tiemen Stelwagen, and Jaap Van Der Voort also created the Hybrid to be eco-friendly: Driving the wheels are battery-powered electric motors and the souls of lesser, weaker traditional paddle boats, which this vehicle must consume to stay alive.

Upcoming Military Robot Could Feed on Dead Bodies
It could be a combination of 19th-century mechanics, 21st-century technology — and a 20th-century horror movie.

Robotic Technology Inc.'s Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robot — that's right, "EATR" — "can find, ingest, and extract energy from biomass in the environment (and other organically-based energy sources), as well as use conventional and alternative fuels (such as gasoline, heavy fuel, kerosene, diesel, propane, coal, cooking oil, and solar) when suitable," reads the company's Web site.
That "biomass" and "other organically-based energy sources" wouldn't necessarily be limited to plant material — animal and human corpses contain plenty of energy, and they'd be plentiful in a war zone.
EATR will be powered by the Waste Heat Engine developed by Cyclone Power Technology of Pompano Beach, Fla., which uses an "external combustion chamber" burning up fuel to heat up water in a closed loop, generating electricity.
The advantages to the military are that the robot would be extremely flexible in fuel sources and could roam on its own for months, even years, without having to be refueled or serviced.
Upon the EATR platform, the Pentagon could build all sorts of things — a transport, an ambulance, a communications center, even a mobile gunship.
In press materials, Robotic Technology presents EATR as an essentially benign artificial creature that fills its belly through "foraging," despite the obvious military purpose.

Yanko says the Dynamic Augmented Wheel System are guided by a magnetic guide rail on the inside that hold's the wheel in place while driving straight, and moves to let it shift with the car's center of gravity while turning. The current design is inspired by motorcycle wheels and the human foot, making uses of servos, a drive gear and embedded magnets in each segment to pull this feat off.
Currently, the prototype wheel works on a 1:2 scale, but no word on actual implementation plans.
