Hyon Song-wol, a singer, rumoured to be a former lover of the North Korean leader, is said to have been arrested on Aug 17 with 11 others for violating laws against pornography.
The reports in South Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper indicate that Hyon, a singer with the Unhasu Orchestra, was among those arrested on August 17 for violating domestic laws on pornography.
All 12 were machine-gunned three days later, with other members of North Korea's most famous pop groups and their immediate families forced to watch. The onlookers were then sent to prison camps, victims of the regime's assumption of guilt by association, the reports stated.
“They were executed with machine guns while the key members of the Unhasu Orchestra, Wangjaesan Light Band and Moranbong Band as well as the families of the victims looked on,” said a Chinese source reported in the newspaper.

Kim's wife, Ri Sol-ju, was also a member of the Unhasu Orchestra before marriage and one theory is that Ri objected to the continuing high profile of her husband's former girlfriend.
North Korea's Communist dictator reportedly purged his own step-mother, Kim Ok, from her post as a senior official in the Workers' Party Finance and Accounting Department as he sought to tighten his grip on power within the country.
She was luckier than Kim Chol, vice minister of the army, who was executed with a mortar round in October 2012.
Kim Chol was reportedly executed for drinking and carousing during the official mourning period after Kim Jong-il's death.

An expert on North Korean affairs believes the singer was executed for "political reasons."
"If these people had only made pornographic videos, then it is simply not believable that their punishment was execution," Toshimitsu Shigemura, a professor at Tokyo's Waseda University and an authority on North Korean affairs, told The Daily Telegraph.
"They could have been made to disappear into the prison system there instead.
"There is a political reason behind this," he said, suggesting that the groups may have been leaning towards a rival faction in Pyongyang's shadowy political world.
"Or, as Kim's wife once belonged to the same group, it is possible that these executions are more about Kim's wife," Professor Shigemura added.

Internet side dish Amanda Rosenberg, 26 -- a UK Googler who recently moved to the San Francisco corporate offices to work for Google Glass, a pet Brin project -- has been moved to another post there “to be even further from Sergei in the chain of command,” a source close to the scandal said today.
Brin’s affair with Rosenberg was revealed yesterday after tech blog AllThingsD reported the search engine co-founder had split with his wife of six years, Anne Wojcicki. ValleyWag.com quickly outed Rosenberg as the other woman.
It’s unclear how long Rosenberg and Brin had been dating on the sly, but a source said the Google co-founder and his wife, both 40, were “still together when Amanda entered the picture.”
Brin and Wojciki – CEO of DNA testing kit firm 23andME --split about four months ago, an insider said.
Another source with knowledge of the relationship said it is “open to debate” on whether Rosenberg caused the split and called the Brin-Wojcicki marriage “complicated.”
Rosenberg had been dating another Googler, Hugo Barra, a top Android exec. Barra resigned this week to take a job with China Android phone maker Xiaomi.
His departure came in the wake of “a recent thorny personal situation related to the end of a romantic relationship he had with another Googler,” according to AllThingsD.
Adding to the drama, Wojcicki’s sister Susan Wojcicki is a senior Google exec. Brin and cofounder Larry Page started Google in Susan’s garage.
Google did not respond to calls for comment on the relationship, or whether it violated any corporate ethics code.
“Romantic relationships between co-workers can, depending on the work roles and respective positions of the co-workers involved, create an actual or apparent conflict of interest,” according to the Google conduct code posted online.
“If a romantic relationship does create an actual or apparent conflict, it may require changes to work arrangements or even the termination of employement of either or both individuals involved.”
The company also provides employees a handy conflict of interest litmus test.
“When faced with a potential conflict of interest, ask yourself: would this activity harm my reputation, negatively impact my ability to do my job at Google or potentially harm Google?” the code suggests. “Would this activity embarrass Google or me if it showed up on the front page of a newspaper or a blog?”
“If the answer to any of these questions is ‘yes,’ the relationship or situation is likely to create a conflict of interest and you should avoid it.”
Rosenberg could not be reached.

Detik.com - Meski Sony telah mengumumkan kehadiran konsol game generasi terbarunya, PlayStation 4, beberapa waktu silam, ternyata hal tersebut tidak membuat Sony memalingkan perhatiannya dari PlayStation 3.
Sony jutru telah menyiapkan konsol game PlayStation 3 versi terjangkau. Pada PlayStation 3 versi murah tersebut Sony tidak lagi membekalinya dengan media penyimpanan berkapasitas puluhan gigabyte, melainkan cukup dengan sebuah nand flash berkapasitas hanya 12 GB.
Tentunya dengan kapasitas sekecil itu, tidak banyak game yang dapat disimpan. Bahkan mungkin hanya sekedar profil dan save game dari game yang dimainkan saja yang dapat disimpan.
Namun dengan iming-iming harga terjangkau yang ditawarkan Sony, bukan tidak mungkin gamer akan mengabaikan hal tersebut dan tetap menikmati game meski langsung dari kepingan Bluray.
Seperti dikutip detikINET dari Engadget, Kamis (15/8/2013), kocek yang harus dikeluarkan untuk memboyongnya memang terbilang terjangkau, karena gamer yang meminatinya hanya perlu merogoh USD 199 atau sekitar Rp 2 juta saja.

Honda Brio MPV Tempel Harga Avanza

DHA adalah perusahaan gabungan antara Dongfeng Motor Corporation dan Honda Motor Company dengan kepemilikan saham setara (50:50). Unit yang bermasalah adalah yang diproduksi antara Maret 2010 sampai Agustus 2012. "Pada kondisi ekstrem, tiang piston peredam kejut itu bisa patah," tulis lembaga tersebut.

When available, direct links to account delete pages are provided. JustDelete.me also categorizes each service into "easy," "medium," "hard," and "impossible," depending on the difficulty of deleting an account from that service. The site also provides tidbits of information about account deletion for each service.
Google and Instagram, for example, both land in the "easy" category, since these companies only require that users login and opt to delete their accounts. Amazon, on the other hand, gets a "hard" tag due to the fact that you have to send an email to the company requesting to have your account deleted; JustDelete.me links directly to Amazon’s appropriate contact form for doing so.
Other services, like Craigslist and Evernote, land in the “impossible” category. Evernote only allows users to temporarily deactivate their accounts, notes JustDelete.me, while Craigslist offers no way for users to delete accounts, "not even by contacting support."
In a post on his blog, Lewis says he came up with the idea for JustDelete.me after hearing how difficult it is to delete a Skype or Netflix account.
JustDelete.me went live on August 19, with 16 services in its directory. The list has since grown to nearly 130 services, at the time of this writing. And fellow Web developer Mike Rogers created a Google Chrome extension to make the account deletion process even easier.
Poole says he believes the booming popularity JustDelete.me has received – more than 500,000 page views in its first week – stems from growing discontent with Internet-connected services, in light of the recent revelations about NSA surveillance. The "honeymoon period" for the Web, says Poole, has ended.
"Five years ago, when things like Facebook and MySpace were still in their infancy, people didn’t see the harm in sharing their personal information," said Poole in an email to Digital Trends. "Recently, with the drama surrounding the NSA and stories of large companies selling personal information, I think the public has realized we can’t just put anything online, as nobody really knows what information is 'safe' anymore."

Berlabel Inspection Campaign, recall PT Krama Yudha Tiga Berlian Motors (KTB) mengatakan kalau saat ini mereka siap melakukan recall untuk Mitsubishi Strada Triton dan Pajero Sport. Kampanye recall itu menurut Mitsubishi dimaksudkan untuk menjaga kualitas kedua kendaraan tadi.
Langkah ini terpaksa diambil oleh Mitsubishi karena mereka menemukan ketidaksempurnaan pengelasan pada komponen front lower arm, meski kemungkinannya kecil.
Merek Jepang ini juga mengatakan kalau mereka sebenarnya belum menemukan adanya laporan terkait adanya insiden yang berhubungan dengan masalah ini.
Strada Triton dan Pajero Sport yang terkena recall menurut Mitsubishi akan terjadi pada kendaraan yang diproduksi di periode 21 April 2011 sampai 17 April 2012.

Apabila ketika pemeriksaan ditemukan ketidaksempurnaan di komponen yang dimaksud, maka Mitsubishi siap mengganti komponen tersebut tanpa biaya. Proses pemeriksaan dan penggantian komponen pun diperkirakan hanya membutuhkan waktu sekitar 2 jam saja.
Berlabel Inspection Campaign, recall PT Krama Yudha Tiga Berlian Motors (KTB) mengatakan kalau saat ini mereka siap melakukan recall untuk Mitsubishi Strada Triton dan Pajero Sport. Kampanye recall itu menurut Mitsubishi dimaksudkan untuk menjaga kualitas kedua kendaraan tadi.
Langkah ini terpaksa diambil oleh Mitsubishi karena mereka menemukan ketidaksempurnaan pengelasan pada komponen front lower arm, meski kemungkinannya kecil.
Merek Jepang ini juga mengatakan kalau mereka sebenarnya belum menemukan adanya laporan terkait adanya insiden yang berhubungan dengan masalah ini.
Strada Triton dan Pajero Sport yang terkena recall menurut Mitsubishi akan terjadi pada kendaraan yang diproduksi di periode 21 April 2011 sampai 17 April 2012.

It’s one small step for energy -- and one giant blast for lasers.
Lawrence Livermore’s National Ignition Facility announced Tuesday a successful test of its ultrapowerful laser system, which melds 192 laser beams into a single incredible burst of energy. On Aug. 13, the facility was activated for 14 billionths of a second and aimed at a tiny capsule of fuel. The result: approximately 350 trillion watts of power -- hundreds of times more than the entire United States consumes at any given instant.
“We’re working in a place where no human has ever gone before,” Ed Moses, principle associate director for NIF and Photon Science, told FoxNews.com. “We’re working on the bleeding edge of fusion physics.”
Fusion is similar to fission, where atoms are split releasing massive amounts of energy. But instead of being torn apart, atoms are welded together in fusion. It’s the same ongoing energy process in the sun and other stars, a "perfect power" because more energy is released than used. Fusion could solve the world’s energy problems -- if it's possible at all.
In the NIF, beams of light converge on pellets of hydrogen isotopes to create a controlled micro-explosion. As the beams move through a series of amplifiers, their energy increases. From beginning to end, the total energy grows from one-billionth of a joule to a potential high of 4 million joules, NIF says -- a factor of more than a quadrillion. The current test reached 1.7 million joules (or megajoules), though a test last year hit a record high of 1.85.
Last year’s test yielded unexpected results, however. In this test, NIF dialed down the laser beam’s power and tweaked it, for tremendous results.
We lowered the energy a tiny bit -- about 5 percent -- but more important, we changed the shape of the energy pulse. We moved energy from the back of the pulse to the front. We got three times the energy out,” Moses told FoxNews.com.
“Our goal is to get fusion burn -- more energy out than we put in.”
Because the laser is on for the merest fraction of a second, it costs little to operate -- between $5 and $20 per blast. Still, the cost of the facility has raised temperatures in Washington. The gigantic laser lab was built in California for $3.5 billion in 2008, and ran up approximately $1.5 billion more in operating costs over the past five years.
Despite the latest success, ignition hasn’t happened, and NIF’s managers admitted to Congress in December that they can’t guarantee that it will ever succeed.
"At present, it is too early to assess whether or not ignition can be achieved at the National Ignition Facility," wrote Thomas P. D'Agostino, administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) in a report requested by Congress last year.
Congress had given the facility until the end of 2012 to achieve its goal of ignition. The NNSA report proposed instead a three-year program to better understand why the actual implosion does not agree with scientific models. And three years may not be enough. "The three-year plan culminates in a comprehensive review at the end of FY 2015. At that time, NNSA will have an assessment of the likelihood and schedule for achieving ignition," the report said.
Moses told FoxNews.com funding is lower than hoped for, but still sufficient to operate.
“We’re coming into the beginning of the fiscal year and we think we have a pretty good picture of where the funding is,” he said. That the latest laser blast more effectively matches models helps the facility to meet its other key goal: nuclear weapon stewardship. Moses said the test informs basic understanding of nuclear energy, weapons science and efficacy, and basic understanding of how the cosmos works.
“This represents an important advance in establishing a self-sustaining burning target, the next critical step on the path to fusion ignition on NIF.”

Singa dan Harimau di Taman Rimbo Jambi Mati Diracun

Tempo.co - Seekor Harimau Sumatera (Panthera Tigris Sumatrae) dan dua ekor Singa Afrika (Panthera Leo), penghuni Kebun Binatang Taman Rimbo Jambi, mati diracun.
"Kami sudah pastikan mati diracun, karena hasil labfor membuktikan pelaku mencampurkan jenis racun Striknin ke dalam makanan," kata Kepala Dinas Peternakan Privinsi Jambi, Sepdinal, pada acara jumpa pers di Jambi, Senin, 26 Agustus 2013.
Sepdinal memaparkan Harimau Sumatera yang diberi nama Peter, 9 tahun, mati pada Sabtu, 17 Agustus 2013, sekitar pukul 19.30 WIB. Kemudian pada Minggu dini hari, 18 Agustus 2013, sekitar pukul 03.00 WIB, menyusul seekor singa jantan, yakni Singa Afrika bernama Gebo. Keesokan harinya, Senin dini hari, 19 Agustus 2013, sekitar pukul 02.30 WIB, giliran singa betina bernama Sonia mengalami nasib yang sama.
Sepasang singa yang malang itu didatangkan dari Taman Safari Indonesia II Cisarua pada 24 Juli 2013.
Binatang lain yang hampir mengalami nasib serupa adalah seekor anak harimau bernama Ayu. Namun, dapat diselamatkan tim dokter hewan yang bertugas di Taman Rimba Jambi.
"Kasus sudah diusut penyidik Pegawai Negeri Sipil Balai Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam Jambi. Kami menduga dilakukan orang dalam," ujar Sepdinal.
Menurut Sepdinal, bila dugaan keterlibatan orang dalam tersebut terbukti, akan ditindak tegas dan akan diserahkan kepada pihak kepolisian untuk diproses secara hukum.
Organ tubuh ketiga binatang yang kini sudah langka dan dilindungi itu, mulai dari hati, jantung, paru, ginjal, usus, dan sisa makanan di dalam lambung, sudah diambil dan diperiksa di Balai Penyidikan dan Pengujian Veteriner Regional II Bukit Tinggi, Sumatera Barat. Tujuannya untuk memastikan penyebab kematiannya. Sedangkan tubuhnya akan diawetkan.
Jenis racun Striknin, kata Sepdinal, tidak dijual bebas dan hanya untuk kebutuhan khusus Dinas Peternakan dan Kesehatan Hewan.

Dengan dimensi yang lebih kecil, diperkirakan Majesty S XC155 akan diterima pasar Jepang dengan lebih mudah. Pasalnya, kini dibutuhkan kendaraan perkotaan dengan kinerja yang lebih kompak dan mudah dikendarai. Di Jepang, Yamaha menargetkan penjualan hingga 5 ribu unit sampai akhir tahun.

Apparently Sambora, who has been in the band for 30 years, makes $2 million a month plus 20 percent of the profits while on tour. Xenidis makes $10,000 a month, with no profit share.

Laporan "Gangguan Jalan" Tersedia di Google Maps
Kompas.com - Juni lalu, Google mengakuisisi perusahaan aplikasi GPS sosial Waze dengan nilai yang mencengangkan, yaitu mencapai lebih dari 1 miliar dollar AS. Banyak pihak berspekulasi mengenai motif di balik pembelian perusahaan itu. Jawabannya kini mulai mengemuka.
Seperti dilaporkan oleh The Verge, Google pada Selasa (20/8/2013) mengumumkan penerapan fitur pelaporan gangguan jalan secara langsung di aplikasi mobile Google Maps, mirip dengan yang terdapat pada Waze.
Gangguan jalan dimaksud bisa bermacam-macam, seperti banjir, penutupan jalan, atau kecelakaan. Tujuan pelaporannya adalah memberi tahu pengguna Maps lainnya agar bisa menghindari daerah yang bermasalah. Fitur ini adalah salah satu ciri khas aplikasi peta sosial bikinan Waze.
Di Google Maps, yang menjadi pelapor kejadian bukanlah pengguna software itu sendiri, melainkan para pengguna Waze.

Xerox's Scanner Problem Just Got Bigger
Businessweek.com - Xerox (XRX) is now saying that some of its scanners can alter numbers in documents, even at the highest resolution setting. It blames a software bug for which it does not yet have a fix. “We continue to work tirelessly and diligently to develop a software patch to address the problem,” the company said in an Aug. 11 statement.
The admission over the weekend is a fresh embarrassment for Xerox, which assured customers last week that scanners would alter documents only if the factory settings were changed to a lower resolution. Now it says problems can occur at the factory settings and even at the “highest modes”—i.e., above the factory settings.
“We apologize for any confusion that came from our prior communications,” Rick Dastin, president of Xerox’s office and solutions business group, said in Sunday’s statement.
Routine documents should still be reproduced perfectly, according to Dastin. The ones where problems occur are “stress” documents, “which include documents with small fonts, those scanned multiple times and hard to read.” His statement includes a list of affected machines.
The problem came to light when German computer scientist David Kriesel scanned a construction plan on a Xerox machine and noticed that it changed numbers on some of the room measurements. In an e-mail, Kriesel said he was honored that Xerox had reached out to him to acknowledge the problem and asked him to test their patch. He wrote, “I am glad not to go down in history as the guy too dumb to read the manual. :-)”

Detik.com - Bagi produsen mobil, keselamatan pengendara harusnya menjadi salah satu fokus utama mereka. Ford sepertinya sadar akan hal tersebut. Merek Amerika Serikat ini pun menarik puluhan ribu mobil hybrid mereka karena atapnya kurang kuat.
Ford Motor Co mengumumkan kalau mereka akan menarik kembali (recall) 33.021 Ford C-Max karena atap dianggap tidak memenuhi persyaratan untuk melindungi pengendara dan penumpang terhadap cedera kepala bila mobil terguling.
Kendaraan-kendaraan yang ditarik adalah Ford C-Max buatan antara 19 Januari 2012 dan 26 Juni 2013 di Michigan.
Penarikan ini hanya melibatkan Ford C-Max yang tidak memiliki panoramic roof. Badan Keselamatan Lalu Lintas dan Jalan Raya Amerika atau National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) yang menguji mobil ini menemukan masalah keamanan pada atap.
Pada kampanye recall ini, Ford mengatakan pihaknya akan menginstal bahan plastik yang bisa menyerap energi di bawah atap pada kedua sisi kendaraan untuk memperbaiki masalah.
Tidak ada kecelakaan atau cedera yang terjadi akibat masalah ini.

Mesin Mati Mendadak, Kawasaki Recall Ninja 300 di Kanada
Otomotifnet.com - Transport Canada mengumumkan recall untuk Kawasaki Ninja 300 keluaran 2013. Pasalnya, motor sport fairing dua silinder ini kedapatan mengalami gejala "engine stalling" pada beberapa kasus. Engine stalling adalah kondisi dimana mesin motor mendadak mati ketika deselerasi atau idle.
Awalnya kasus ini muncul di Amerika Serikat, namun badan keselamatan transportasi di negeri Paman Sam ini National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) belum membuat keputusan apapun meski sudah ada 36 komplain yang masuk.
Bahkan seperti dilaporkan motorcycle.com, ada salah satu korban yang mengaku tertabrak kendaraan lain dari belakang setelah tiba-tiba mesin motornya mati mendadak. Si korban bahkan sampai mengalami patah tulang bahu.
Dalam penangannya, pihak Kawasaki akan mengganti electronic control unit (ECU) pada perangkat injeksi untuk 745 Kawasaki Ninja 300 di Kanada.

Aplikasi ini dibuat untuk mengantisipasi pencurian data dan informasi pengguna ponsel pintar dan tablet berbasiskan Android.
Aplikasi ini memiliki peran yang tidak jauh berbeda dari aplikasi "Find My Phone" milik Apple. Ia mampu membantu pengguna menemukan ponsel yang hilang atau dicuri, sambil melindungi data pengguna dari pihak yang tidak diinginkan.
Saat kehilangan perangkat, pengguna dapat bisa mengakses situs ADM dengan menggunakan akun Google, dan melihat lokasi terakhirnya melalui Google Maps. Satu hal yang harus diingat, fitur pencarian ini tidak akan bekerja apabila ponsel atau tablet dimatikan. Keakuratannya juga berdasarkan GPS, WiFi, dan sinyal jaringan mobile perangkat.

Honda Tarik Sedan Accord di Amerika
Detik.com - Meski belum berumur setahun, seribuan Honda Accord kena recall. Produsen Jepang itu menarik sedan andalannya karena ada potensi tangki bahan bakar bocor. Ini tentu berbahaya.
Motor Trend melaporkan kalau 1.000 Honda Accord harus ditarik karena leher tangki bahan bakar kemungkinan belum dipasang dengan benar. Hal ini membuat bahan bakar rawan bocor dan bila itu terjadi, maka resiko kebakaran akan membesar.
Untuk mengatasi masalah ini, Honda akan menarik 1.659 unit sedan andalannya itu untuk diperbaiki. Mobil yang terkena recall adalah Accord produksi antara 15 Januari sampai 5 April 2013 ini.
Di saat yang hampir bersamaan General Motors juga menarik Chevrolet Silverado dan GMC Sierra karena masalah pada kantung udara (airbag).
Kedua pikap itu dikhawatirkan mengaplikasi airbag yang mungkin tidak sepenuhnya mengembang jika terjadi kecelakaan.

Is This China's Second Aircraft Carrier?
Foreignpolicy.com - China's military - especially its navy - is getting more sophisticated by the day. You're looking at photos from Chinese Web forums showing what appears to be Beijing's first fully domestically-built aircraft carrier under construction. (An earlier carrier was a retrofit of a Soviet ship.)
If these photos are legit, this is just the latest in a string of new, modern weapons -- from stealth fighters to stealth drones -- that China has surprised the world with in the last three years. But it's arguably the most important. The U.S. Navy has a commanding lead over every other military on the open seas. If China can close that gap, even just a bit, it could significantly shake up the global power equation. (India, a longtime single aircraft carrier operator, is also preparing to field multiple aircraft carriers in the near future.)
What gives this simple slice of a ship away as a future carrier? First, that big, flat top that's larger than the rest of the hull -- it's perfect for mounting a flight deck. Then there's the big open space in the middle of the hull just below that flight deck; that appears to be the makings of the ship's hangar deck.
In the first picture you can see a cutout section on the right side of the vessel (left in the photo) that might be designed to accommodate an aircraft elevator with access to the hangar deck. Update: This cutout might also be part of the support for the carrier's "island" superstructure. As you can see in this satellite image, the cutout looks a bit narrow for an aircraft elevator. Instead, it might be something similar to the opening beneath Lioning's superstructure as shown in a photo here.
Finally, several of the photos below show a v-shaped notch cut into the left side the flat top, this might be the groove for a catapults.

This last detail is significant. China's current carrier, Liaoning (an unfinished Soviet carrier once known Varyag) has no catapults. Those give a carrier the ability to launch a much more advanced and capable air wing. Not only can catapult-equipped ships carry a wider variety of fighters and strike planes, they can launch large, slow propeller-driven radar planes that can scan large swaths of the sky for enemy aircraft and direct the carrier's fighters to them.
The Liaoning instead uses a ski-jump like ramp on its bow to get J-15 fighters airborne. It's pretty much limited to being able to launch J-15s with their very powerful engines. If this new ship has catapults, it could do much, much more.
Killer Apps has previously shown you photos suggesting China is working on developing aircraft carrier catapults. The Chinese government is rumored to be working on both traditional steam catapults (like those used by Western navies for the last 60 years) and a version of the U.S. Navy's brand new electromagnetic catapults. These electromagnetic catapults can launch a wider variety of aircraft and use less energy than steam cats.
Photos have also emerged showing what looks like a Chinese attempt to build a propeller-driven radar plane resembling the U.S. Navy's E-2 Hawkeye -- among the larger, less glamorous aircraft to fly from a carrier but one of the most important due to its ability to find enemy aircraft.
(It's worth pointing out that China's second stealth fighter, the J-31, might be designed to operate from an aircraft carrier.)
China's second carrier is rumored to be based on the design for Soviet Union's first, (and never-finished) catapult-equipped carrier, the Ulanovsk. That ship featured two catapults and was considerably larger than the Soviet Admiral Kuznetzov class that Liaoning belongs to.
Ulanovsk was supposed to be the first of the USSR's fleet of nuclear-powered supercarriers meant to compete with the U.S. Navy's Nimitz class ships (which were still larger and more capable than Ulanovsk). The fall of the Soviet Union changed all that and the ship was scrapped at a Ukranian shipyard in 1992 when it was about 20 percent complete.
The Ulanovsk's catapults were to be mounted amidships, immediately across the flight deck from one of the ship's aircraft elevators -- just like the design shown in today's pictures from China. It looks like that rumor about China's new ship being based on the unfinished Soviet carrier has been confirmed. (Though this ship could be a modified Kuznetzov class design.)
China has also based its J-15 carrier fighters on Russia's Su-33 fighter.
China has been buying up old Australian and Russian carriers since the 1980s. Ostensibly, China purchased the ships to either scrap them or turn them into museums and even a posh hotel. What Beijing didn't advertise loudly is that Chinese engineers poured over those ships to learn as much as possible about their construction and design.
When China bought the empty hulk of the Varyag (a considerably more advanced design than the older ships it purchased, some of which dated to World War II) from a Ukrainian shipyard in 1998 it said it was going to turn the ship into a casino in Macau. Fifteen years later, the ex Varyag is equipped with modern weapons and serving in the PLAN as Liaoning.
So there you have it, China continues its breakneck military modernization effort and will likely have at least two aircraft carriers floating by the end of this decade.

NSA program reportedly allows analysts to track emails, chats, web searches
Foxnews.com - The National Security Agency is operating a massive database system that allows analysts to scour individuals' emails, chats and Internet browsing histories at will, according to a new report from The Guardian based on leaked documents.
The article was quickly challenged by the NSA. In a statement forwarded to Fox News, the agency said "allegations of widespread, unchecked analyst access to NSA collection data are simply not true."
The agency acknowledged the existence of the program -- called XKeyscore -- but said access is limited and suggested it was mainly aimed at foreign intelligence targets.
The Guardian article described it differently. According to the piece, the XKeyscore program is the "widest-reaching" system the agency has and allows analysts without prior authorization to dig around the database by filling out an on-screen form giving a basic justification.
According to the report, the program covers "nearly everything a typical user does on the internet" including emails and websites visited. It also reportedly allows analysts to intercept Internet activity in "real time."
The Guardian report seems to make a distinction between what is technically possible under this program and what is legally allowed. It notes that U.S. law requires the NSA to get a warrant if the target is a U.S. individual -- but says the XKeyscore program provides "the technological capability, if not the legal authority" to go after Americans without a warrant as long as an analyst knows information like an email or IP address.
The NSA, in its statement, pushed back on these assertions.
"The implication that NSA's collection is arbitrary and unconstrained is false," the agency said. "NSA's activities are focused and specifically deployed against -- and only against -- legitimate foreign intelligence targets in response to requirements that our leaders need for information necessary to protect our nation and its interests."
The agency said those with access to the system are trained on their "ethical and legal obligations." The agency complained that the ongoing leaks continue to jeopardize security.
The statement said the programs as a whole have helped defend the nation, and that as of 2008, "there were over 300 terrorists captured using intelligence generated from XKEYSCORE."
The report was based on documents by NSA leaker Edward Snowden, who continues to evade capture by the U.S.
Journalist Glenn Greenwald, who wrote the Guardian article, had claimed over the weekend that he had evidence to back up Snowden's past claims that low-level workers and other officials could tap into almost anyone's communications.

President Obama also told Democratic lawmakers on Wednesday that he's open to some changes in NSA programs, according to those present at the meeting.

Not so, says one expert who claims to have cracked the code: The mysterious language is actually the oldest form of written Hebrew, placing the ancient Israelites in Jerusalem earlier than previously believed.
"Hebrew speakers were controlling Jerusalem in the 10th century, which biblical chronology points to as the time of David and Solomon," ancient Near Eastern history and biblical studies expert Douglas Petrovich told FoxNews.com.
"Whoever they were, they were writing in Hebrew like they owned the place," he said.
First discovered near the Temple Mount in Jerusalem last year, the 10th century B.C. fragment has been labeled the Ophel Inscription. It likely bears the name of the jug's owners and its contents.
If Petrovich's analysis proves true, it would be evidence of the accuracy of Old Testament tales. If Hebrew as a written language existed in the 10th century, as he says, the ancient Israelites were recording their history in real time as opposed to writing it down several hundred years later. That would make the Old Testament an historical account of real-life events.
According to Petrovich, archaeologists are unwilling to call it Hebrew to avoid conflict.
"It's just the climate among scholars that they want to attribute as little as possible to the ancient Israelites," he said.
Needless to say, his claims are stirring up controversy among those who do not like to mix the hard facts of archaeology -- dirt, stone and bone -- with stories from the Bible.
Tel Aviv University archaeologist Israel Finkelstein told FoxNews.com that the Ophel Inscription is critical to the early history of Israel. But romantic notions of the Bible shouldn't cloud scientific methods -- a message he pushed in 2008 when a similar inscription was found at a site many now call one of King David's palaces.
At the time, he warned the Associated Press against the "revival in the belief that what's written in the Bible is accurate like a newspaper."
Today, he told FoxNews.com that the Ophel Inscription speaks to "the expansion of Jerusalem from the Temple Mount, and shows us the growth of Jerusalem and the complexity of the city during that time." But the Bible? Maybe, maybe not.
Professor Aren Maeir of Bar Ilan University agrees that some archaeologists are simply relying too heavily on the Bible itself as a source of evidence.
"[Can we] raise arguments about the kingdom of David and Solomon? That seems to me a grandiose upgrade," he told Haaretz recently.
In the past decade, there has been a renaissance in Israel of archaeologists looking for historical evidence of biblical stories. FoxNews.com has reported on several excavations this year claiming to prove a variety of stories from the Bible.
Most recently, a team lead by archaeologist Yossi Garfinkel wrapped up a ten-year excavation of the possible palace of King David, overlooking the valley where the Hebrew king victoriously smote the giant Goliath.
Garfinkel has another explanation as to the meaning behind the Ophel Inscription.
"I think it's like a [cellphone] text," Garfinkel told FoxNews.com. "If someone takes a text from us 3,000 years from now, he will not be able to understand it."

"What's more important is that there is a revolution in this type of inscription being found," Garfinkel told FoxNews.com. There have been several from the same time period found across Israel in the past five years.

Volkswagen stops academics from revealing car hack
Foxnews.com - A British university is delaying the release of an academic paper on how the anti-theft systems of millions of Volkswagen vehicles are at risk of being hacked after the German carmaker took legal action against it.
In a statement, the University of Birmingham said it would "defer publication" of the paper — which explains how researchers were able to subvert Volkswagen's security system — after an interim injunction issued by England's High Court. It said it was "disappointed with the judgment which did not uphold the defense of academic freedom and public interest, but respects the decision."
The university did not elaborate on how long the paper would be held, saying it was still getting legal advice.
The paper — which a group of academics including Birmingham's Flavio Garcia had planned to publish next month — revealed three ways to bypass a brand of computer chip used by several auto manufacturers to fight vehicle theft.
Often referred to as immobilizers, such chips use a secret algorithm to ensure that a car can only be started with the right key, and they've been a mandatory in all new vehicles sold in Britain over the past 15 years.
Crucially, the researchers planned to reveal how they were able to reverse-engineer the algorithm — and publish a copy of it in their paper.
Volkswagen said that publishing the formula would be "highly damaging" and "facilitate theft of cars," according to a ruling handed down last month by High Court Justice Colin Birss. The judge said that millions of Volkswagen vehicles were issued with the chip, including high-end cars such as Porsches, Audis, Bentleys, and Lamborghinis.
The researchers countered that Volkswagen's claim that the paper would be a boon to car thieves was overblown, that they had warned the chip's manufacturer about the vulnerability six months ago, and that a gag order would interfere with their legitimate academic work.
Birss said he sympathized with the researchers' rights, but that he had to weigh them against public safety.
"I recognize the high value of academic free speech, but there is another high value, the security of millions of Volkswagen cars," he said.
It's not yet clear if the case will go to trial. The University of Birmingham declined further comment Tuesday. Volkswagen also declined comment, citing ongoing proceedings.
